This is a framework to help establish a methodical roadmap for redesigning our large scale established web properties. Listed below are the major steps in this process to ensure an orderly and proper progression and transition throughout the development plan.

PLANNING PHASES

  • Stakeholder Buy-In
    • Communicate the importance of them being engaged throughout this process
    • Assemble a small group of (“VIP”) volunteer stakeholders and communicate regularly with them
    • Outcome: establish ongoing two-way communication of site goals, content, design and functionality
  • Competitor Research
    • Review design, functionality and methods of industry competitors
    • Compile competitor links and a list of positives and negatives
    • Outcome: incorporate appropriate ideas / concepts as they would apply for our context / purpose
  • Audience Strategy Audit: Targets, Reach, Goals, Conversions
    • Review all business intelligence & identify key trends & stats (analytics, leads, conversions, etc)
    • Evaluate previous site conversion performance goals (what works, what does not)
    • Consider performing user (from different audiences) surveys / feedback to assess current state of site
    • Identify new avenues, methods, targets & opportunities
    • Review competitor research outcome
    • Define new and/or adjust existing audience strategy & goals
    • Outcome: informed, updated & comprehensive audience strategy / goals to be implemented
  • Site Content Audit
    • Develop site mind map to visually represent entire site
    • Home page evaluation
    • Main & secondary navigation evaluation
    • Interior sections and pages – all page copy
    • Media (images, pdfs, videos, any downloads)
    • Outcome: a complete current site content inventory
  • Site Content & Processes Strategy Audit
    • Filter site content audit outcome through audience strategy audit outcome
    • If available, factor in user survey feedback
    • Get stakeholders input and direction on content and processes / functionality
    • Evaluate what works / what doesn’t, as well as new content or processes / functionality needed
    • Specific home page content / processes / goals planning
    • Identify all changes and new needs with a content roadmap
    • Develop a proposed new site mind map to visually represent these changes
    • Outcome: a content strategy / processes / functionality roadmap
  • Site Technical Audit
    • Hosting environment evaluation (pros / cons / upgrade?)
    • Performance audit (faster, stronger, better – general improvements)
    • Analytics audit (mobile devices, browsers, breakpoints, etc)
    • URL structure audit – proactively preserve URL structure
    • Outcome: a report with considerations, improvements, user browser stats, and a complete URL structure
  • Project Guidelines & Progress Checklist Creation
    • All audit outcomes will be compiled into comprehensive project guidelines.

DEVELOPMENT PHASES

  • Site Content Gathering & Production
    • Review & act with consideration & direction of project guidelines
    • Collect from stakeholders, repurpose from existing, or develop new content
    • As much content as humanly possible will be gathered / created at this stage
    • Require signoff from all
    • Outcome: (in a perfect world) complete site content
  • Alpha Phase Planning
    • Determine exact scope & goals of Alpha Phase (somewhat limited)
    • Outcome: Alpha Phase development milestones
  • Site Graphic Design Process: Alpha Phase
    • Review & act with consideration & direction of project guidelines
    • Design initial mockups
    • Marketing internal review & revisions
    • Outcome: initial designs for Alpha Phase development
  • Site Development Process: Alpha Phase
    • Review & act with consideration & direction of project guidelines
    • Produce design into web ready code & images
    • Develop website processes & functionality
    • Placement of website content & media
    • Marketing internal review & revisions
    • Outcome: Alpha Phase version of website
  • Alpha Phase Internal Site Review
    • Review site against all audit outcomes
    • Testing and feedback of entire Alpha Phase
    • ‘VIP’ stakeholders group review & feedback
    • Outcome: suggested additions, revisions & refinements
  • Beta Phase Planning
    • Set Beta Phase exact scope & goals from internal site review outcome
    • Outcome: Beta Phase development milestones
  • Site Graphic Design Process: Beta Phase
    • Make iterative revisions as directed
    • Develop new designs to support site content additions
    • Outcome: Beta Phase Design complete
  • Site Development Process: Beta Phase
    • Implement revisions on site design, functionality & processes for Beta Phase
    • Produce new additional design into web ready code & images
    • Develop new additional website processes & functionality
    • Outcome: Beta Phase version of website
  • Beta Phase Internal Site Review
    • Review site against all audit outcomes
    • Testing and feedback of Beta Phase changes & additions
    • ‘VIP’ stakeholders group review & feedback
    • Outcome: LIMITED suggested additions, revisions & refinements for Final Refinements
  • Final Refinements
    • Graphic design refinements / tweaks
    • Refinements & tweaks to code – layout, functionality, processes
    • Outcome: site ready for soft launch
  • Site Soft Launch
    • Push all site files to a live status
    • Review site to ensure successful migration
    • Remain on standby to handle any final tweaks / fixes
    • Outcome: site ready for announced launch
  • Site Announced Launch
    • Transition into maintenance mode
